Dambusters 70th Anniversary

It was 70 years ago today that the Operation CHASTISE 'Dambusters' raids of WWII took place.

Like yourselves, no doubt, we have been impressed with the level of news coverage devoted to this anniversary, particularly on the BBC News website, and with the tributes paid to the bravery and skill of all those involved, many of whom were not to return from this exceptional mission.

Several of us here at Just Flight had the privilege of spending an evening several years ago at Channel 4 with Ray Grayston, the flight engineer on Les Knight's Lancaster which successfully breached the Eder Dam. Ray provided us not only with some very useful assistance with our Dam Busters add-on at the time but also regaled us with a host of flying reminiscences and tales during an evening which we shall always remember.

Carenado X-Plane 10 updates

Carenado are in the process of updating their X-Plane aircraft for X-Plane 10 (32-bit and 64-bit) compatibility so as to take advantage of all the improvements that version 10 provides.

The aircraft will run in either X-Plane 9 or X-Plane 10, so if you bought them for X-Plane 9 before the dates below you'll be able to run them in X-Plane 10 after re-downloading the software via your Just Flight account.

Issue 7 of the FSPilot emagazine is now available to download (for a very reasonable $5) and there are plenty of lengthy reviews accompanied by a great selection of screenshots in its 128 pages which we're looking forward to reading in full over the next few weeks.

We were pleased to see that our recent L-1011 Tristar release for FSX was enjoyed by the reviewer ("The modelling and detailing of the exterior and cockpit of the aircraft is excellent") as was the Bear Studios J-15 Naval Flanker ("Effects are great including the ejection of the canopy and ejector seat").

Jim Mackonochie RIP

We were greatly saddened to hear of the death this week of our old friend Jim Mackonochie, a man whose outstanding contribution to the world of flight simulation goes right back its genesis and who was without a doubt one of life's true gentlemen.

Jim's name might not be familiar to all of you, but the likes of Falcon, Eagle Dynamics, Lock On, DCS, and Su-27 Flanker surely are - to name just a few of the projects to which he brought his vision and energy. If you've ever flown a fast combat jet then it's safe to say that you will have benefitted from his many years of involvement in the development and production of some quite amazing aircraft.

Jim was always a true friend to Just Flight and we will always remember him fondly for his unfailing courtesy, good humour and generosity. We enjoyed a great day with him a few years ago at a Duxford Flying Legends show and the number of visitors who were clearly delighted to run into Jim and exchange a few words spoke volumes about what an exceptionally popular and well regarded man he was, as indeed do the many postings on the Condolences page of the DCS website.

We really will miss him and our thoughts are with his family and all his many friends.

Rest in peace, Jim.

A classic trio from Golden Age Simulations

A classic trio of FSX Downloads from Golden Age Simulations are now on sale.

First up is the versatile Ryan ST, first flown in the 1930s and popular as a sports aircraft and a trainer as well as a fixture with the military of several countries. Three versions are included here - the ST-A and the STM-S2 float plane, both in three liveries, and also the experimental ST-A Special 'Super 200'.

If it's air racing you want, you can pit your piloting skills against the course or mix it with other pilots online in five historically accurate versions of the Travel Air Type R 'Mystery Ship'. This package includes Cleveland Municipal Airport scenery with two complete 10-mile closed course racing circuits.

The third aircraft on sale is another machine from the Ryan Aeronautical Company - the Ryan PT-22. You can fly it from the front or rear cockpit in five liveries with three cockpit schemes and also take a spin in two privately owned 220 Continental-powered models in three liveries. The package includes Phenick Field scenery reflecting a civilian flight academy contracted to the Army Flight Training Command circa 1940.

Tony Radmilovich - an appeal for help

The name Tony Radmilovich may well be familiar to you from his writing in PC Pilot and Computer Pilot magazines or from his regular participation in a number of FS groups.

We were extremely sorry to hear that Tony is currently in very bad shape following major spinal surgery, to the extent that he has had to resort to a financial appeal to help pay for his enormous medical bills. You can read Tony's story in his own words here.

A couple of us here at Just Flight knew Tony back in the early days of PC Pilot and he was always a real pleasure to work with - helpful to a fault and most definitely one of the good guys!

If you can spare anything to help Tony out, we know he'd be eternally grateful, and you might also want to take part in the sponsored online flying tour of Canada and the USA which starts at 23.59GMT on January 18th. The event has been organised by the PC Pilot crew, who will all be taking part, and is sponsored and supported by a host of companies and luminaries from the FS world - see the Avsim forum for more details.

We're sure the event will be a great success, and we can guarantee that all virtual pilots will be made very welcome.

Our thoughts are with Tony and his wife Kim - we're hoping it won't be too long before Tony is able to join us all again in the virtual skies.

New MilViz jet fighter for FSX and Prepar3D

MilViz scored a real hit among FS jet fighter fans not so long ago with their F-15E Strike Eagle, and now they've released a superb North American F-86 Sabre for FSX and Prepar3D.

This was the jet, of course, that found fame in the Korean conflict in the early 1950s for its battles with the MiG-15, but this distinctive machine had a much longer role in fighter history than is generally appreciated, continuing to find favour with the air forces of a number of countries long after the Korean hostilities were put on hold.

The English Electric Lightning may not be up with the latest generation of fighters with respect to technological advancements in the cockpit, but there's little to beat it for ferocious power and the pure thrill of flying.

Avsim.com's reviewer clearly felt the same way when he took our Lightning F.6 package for FSX for a trip to the edge of space:

We were very pleased to see good reviews of a couple of our recent FSX add-ons in the French sim magazine Microsimulateur.

A demo F-111 aircraft is now available for you to fly!

Give this superb new machine a try - we're sure you'll enjoy it! The demo aircraft is limited to an altitude of 1,000 feet AGL but is otherwise exactly the same as the just-released Download version for FSX and Prepar3D (the Boxed version is on pre-order now and will be released on Friday 21st September).

The F-111 filled the roles of strategic bomber, tactical strike aircraft and reconnaissance plane with the US and Royal Australian Air Forces through several decades of service, and this unique machine pioneered many technologies which were later to become commonplace on production aircraft, most notably its variable-sweep wings, afterburning turbofan engines and automated terrain-following radar.

Our FSX add-on, developed by Aeroplane Heaven, includes the F-111A and the F-111C variants; both aircraft feature five liveries, highly detailed model-specific virtual cockpits, the distinctive F-111 variable wing swing and a functioning cockpit ejection escape pod.

Lightning update - new flight dynamics

An update (4.2MB) for the Download and Boxed editions of our English Electric Lightning F.6 is now available, providing improved flight dynamics for this spectacular FSX jet.

Changes to the speed limitations, G-force tolerances, aileron effectiveness at low airspeeds, fuel consumption rate and further enhancements make the flight characteristics of the Lightning considerably more realistic - and also make the aircraft more of a challenge to fly!

We'll be exhibiting at this year's Royal International Air Tattoo on the weekend of 7-8 July and are looking forward to heading down to RAF Fairford in a couple of weeks.

The second Expansion Pack for our 737 Professional FSX add-on (Download & Boxed) is now available.

It provides the 737-200, a lengthened version of the 737-100, in eight new international airline liveries and also the T-43A with three USAF liveries.

The T-43A is a modified USAF variant of the 737-200, which replaced the T-29 for training Navigators and Combat Systems Officers. The aircraft was retired in 2010 after 37 years of service, but is here for you to fly in FSX.

We've been doing our best to brush up our rotary flying skills with some of the recent FSX helicopter releases from Military Visualizations and Nemeth Designs - now we've got a couple more to fly along with a great new GA aircraft.

The speedy CH-47 Chinook transport is still providing sterling service many years after its introduction in the 1960s and is a favourite of both the US Army and the RAF. The FSX machine comes in three US Army liveries with a fully modelled cabin complete with deployable machine guns.
